β Cold heading screws

Cold Heading Process of β-titanium alloy socket hex screw M6 Cold Heading Process of β-titanium alloy socket hex screw (class 10.9): Above HRC35,190kgf/cm torque, with bend above 7°.

In the past, the quality of the widely used titanium alloy, Ti6AI-4V, was hard and fragile to break easily in room temperature condition, so it had never been produced in the process of cold heading and forging but been pro-duced in the manufacturing method of CNC cutting; however, titanium alloy is the material that is difficult to be cut, which leads to the high cost resulted from cutting tools and the time of manufacture. After that, the produced screw can satisfy the regulation of Grade 8.8 only, so it is always very challenging to make the titanium alloy made in the old manufacturing process satisfy international screw specification (Grade 10.9).

We worked with a Japanese company,NEWMAN-TECH CORP,to carry out the research and development, and got the novel technology related to titanium alloys. The mass production has been provided by using the method of“the screw from cold heading and forging”, which helps stepwise overcome several problems of the mass production for cold headed screws, such as the difficulty in production, the emperature standard, anti-adhesion ability and lubricant film. Using β-titanium alloy for the manufacturing of cold heading screw with heat treatment could reach the standard of international screw specifications (class 10.9).

The resistance to corrosive of titanium alloy is better than that of stainless steel, which gives an important index for reducing the weight of parts. Besides, the specific strength (the ratio of tensile strength over density) of titani-um alloy is higher than that of either iron or aluminum. In general, these cold headed hex socket cap screws can be applied in fields of parts of bikes, motorcycles and cars at their advanced levels.
